Economical disposal of old barrels
The HSM FP 3000 barrel press in use at MAN Truck & Bus SE
MAN recently started using a barrel press at its Nuremberg plant to compact empty barrels. This has significantly reduced the volume of waste and lowered disposal costs considerably.
MAN in Nuremberg
The Nuremberg site is the main international plant for alternative and conventional drive technologies within the MAN Truck & Bus Group. Here, highly efficient, environmentally friendly diesel and battery-electric drives and components are developed and manufactured and used throughout the entire TRATON network. In addition, MAN also offers individual and customized solutions for external customers in the marine, energy generation, off-road and on-road sectors.
Expansion of production capacities
The construction of a new production and storage hall at the Nuremberg site required the restructuring of the disposal processes for lightweight steel barrels. MAN uses a special material in the production of vehicle components which is delivered in 212-liter steel barrels with lids. After the material has been removed, the light metal barrels can no longer be used and must be disposed of. The large volume of waste resulted in enormous logistical challenges. Collecting and temporarily storing the empty barrels in the production hall or outside on the factory premises was not an option. The logistical and personnel costs would have been too high – a more efficient disposal system was required.

Pressing instead of storing
The idea was to reduce the volume of the used lightweight steel barrels; a barrel press was the solution. While researching suitable equipment, MAN became aware of HSM. During the procurement process, the decision-makers ensured that they found a supplier with expertise in disposal processes and who manufactured its own equipment. Furthermore, it was important for MAN to find a supplier that was as regional as possible to ensure short delivery times and direct support from dedicated contacts.
Important criteria when investing in new systems
When investing in new machinery, MAN focuses on finding the best possible solution for each specific application. The systems must operate reliably, meet all safety requirements, and be economical and energy-efficient. The machinery would only be procured when these criteria were met.
Several factors were decisive in choosing the HSM barrel press:
- Compact design and small footprint, ideal for the planned installation location in close proximity to production
- Transparent product presentation and comprehensive documentation
- Positive consulting experience throughout the entire decision-making process
- Good price-performance ratio
- HSM has a good reputation as an owner-managed manufacturer from southern Germany
- Availability of the machine
This combination convinced MAN and led to the investment. HSM's easy-to-use barrel press fully meets the operational requirements and offers a practical solution, even for any future expansion of the production capacity.
Positive experiences with HSM's services
Our contact with HSM was consistently positive. Their consulting services were competent and practice-oriented, and were tailored to our individual requirements. Procurement and delivery proceeded as planned. On-site commissioning by an HSM service technician went smoothly. Operating personnel received comprehensive training. The technical customer service also responded quickly and coordinated service calls promptly.

An all-around sound investment
MAN’s overall assessment is clearly positive. The high compaction significantly reduces the volume of the used steel barrels, which facilitates transport and makes disposal processes more efficient. Before using the HSM barrel press, approximately 13 uncompressed barrels were disposed of in a 10 m³ container. When compressed, roughly seven times that number fit into the same container. This has reduced disposal costs and the number of internal transports by up to 85 %.
The investment in the HSM FP 3000 barrel press contributes to improved productivity at the MAN Truck & Bus SE's Nuremberg site.
